The Combat and sparring culture

A swordsman is as good as their last encounter. We participate in a highly competitive sparring culture, which encourages its students to put forth their best and challenge their opponents to reach for the same. Our culture is one of improvement and learning by experience, even if that experience has to be learnt at the hands, or weapon, of another student. We adhere to a co-operative cultural practice which allows for both pressure testing of each other, but fosters a comradeship between those studying in the art.

“We all wish to improve. To improve, we must find worthy opponents. To improve others, we must be worthy opponents ourselves. By helping others improve, we get the chance to better ourselves and face better opponents in the future.”

As such, we have have a system which recognises the need to test ourselves and our skill so that the standard of combat is raised by the collective effort of the group. However, we recognise that such an approach must be carefully controlled and monitored, to ensure that all those training are not exposed to unnecessary risks.

Each student to earn the right to open sparring will be rigorously tested to ensure that they are both technically proficient with a weapon, but also have developed enough theoretical understanding to learn something from each defeat in combat.

On top of this, we adhere to rigorous safety protocols. We have two layers of sparring level in the club, allowing each student to operate at either level as their comfort or finances allow. These are our rules for Synthetic Sparring and Steel Sparring. We ensure that our students are not exposed to risk by ensuring that the following minimum safety equipment is observed at each level
